Control Contrast, Then Layer Light
Great theaters protect the screen from stray light and your eyes from hotspots. Paint the first reflection zone around the screen with low-sheen, dark neutrals and keep all fixtures out of the screen’s sightline. Build a three-layer system: ambient (cove or perimeter linear at low output), task (seat-step lights and aisle markers), and accent (backlit panels or wall grazers behind the audience). Avoid bare cans aimed downward near the screen; choose low-UGR optics and baffled trims if downlights are unavoidable.
Projector vs. TV Considerations
For projectors, place dimmable linear grazers behind side slats to visually widen the room without washing the screen. For large TVs, a bias-light strip behind the display reduces eye strain by stabilizing perceived contrast. In both cases, use scene-based controls so Movie drops to 1–3% ambient, Intermission lifts aisles to 20–30%, and Clean-Up brings full output.
Wiring, Controls, and Acoustics
Run separate circuits for ambient vs. task to avoid flicker when dim; specify 0–10V or phase-dimmable drivers compatible with your smart dimmers. Prewire for future speakers and sub placements; isolate the equipment rack in a ventilated closet to cut fan noise. Soft surfaces (acoustic panels, curtains) prevent sparkle highlights and improve dialog clarity.
Reflections & Finishes
Use matte finishes on ceilings and cabinetry; satin or gloss will reflect even low light. Place wall-washers to reveal texture (ribbed panels, microcement) away from the screen side. Keep pathways clear and add a nightlight scene for safe exits.
