Turn Constraints Into Storage Architecture
Map all protrusions—columns, beam drops, cleanouts—then design wraparound built-ins that absorb those elements into a cohesive wall. Use shallower upper cabinets above beam lines and full-depth bases below to keep a clean reveal. Along long walls, run knee-wall credenzas (18–22″) with vented toe-kicks for airflow; at the stair, convert voids into pull-out pantries, coat closets, or gear cubbies.
Flexible, Moisture-Smart Millwork
Choose marine-grade ply carcasses or moisture-resistant MDF with thermofoil or matte lacquer doors. Lift cabinets on polymer feet or aluminum plinths to create a capillary break, and use LED strip lighting inside tall units to make every inch usable. In potential splash zones (bar, laundry), specify quartz counters and epoxy edges.
Multi-Use Furniture & Hidden Guests
Integrate a media wall with ribbed doors that hide AV, a window bench with deep drawers, and a Murphy bed or wall bunks behind acoustic panels. Pair with an egress-compliant window or door so the lounge doubles as a legal guest room.
Order, Access, and Safety
Maintain a continuous 36″ clear path from stair to egress, use integrated pulls that don’t snag the walkway, and place magnet-latch panels wherever shutoffs, cleanouts, or valves live. Standardize bins and label shelves; organization is a finish.
